EV Charging Cost Calculator

Estimate energy drawn from the charger and the cost of an electric-car trip. Keep charging losses separate from driving consumption.

Your result

Estimated charging cost
$18.00
Energy drawn from charger (kWh)
60
Driving energy (kWh)
54

Formula

Driving energy = distance × consumption ÷ 100; charger energy = driving energy ÷ (1 − loss ÷ 100); cost = charger energy × price per kWh.

Worked example

The initial example uses the following assumptions. Its result is computed by the same engine as the calculator. Measurements are metric and money amounts use USD; these are illustrative inputs, not market prices.

Trip distance
300 km
Driving energy consumption
18 kWh/100 km
Electricity price per kWh
0.3
Charging energy lost (%)
10
  • Estimated charging cost: $18.00
  • Energy drawn from charger (kWh): 60
  • Driving energy (kWh): 54

Assumptions and limitations

Loss is the share of input energy that does not reach the battery. Set it to zero if your consumption already measures energy at the meter. Session, parking and time fees are excluded.

Questions about this calculation

Why divide by one minus the loss?

If 10% of input is lost, 90% reaches the battery. Delivering 54 kWh therefore requires 60 kWh of input.

Does this use a live tariff?

No. Enter your per-kWh price and consider other fees separately.
